OpenCollective is a non-profit group that makes it easy for free/open source software projects to seek sponsorship and funding. It makes it easier for them to fundraise. With the release of OpenCollective’s new GitHub bot, they are making it even easier for projects hosted on GitHub to promote their OpenCollective fundraising efforts.
It works like this:
- Go to the OpenCollective Bot on GitHub Apps
- Click “Install”
- Select the user account and repositories where you want it installed
After this, the OpenCollective Bot will comment whenever new issues are opened with specific labels. This makes it possible to ask for donations as soon as new issues are created.
One of the hardest problems with free/open source has been gaining sustainable funding. By creating this bot, OpenCollective paints a very clear picture that oepn source development work requires funding.
